my friend says his friend learned Japanese relatively quickly with a computer program. I was wondering if anyone knew of any and if anyone knew were they can be bought?

I don't know about programs, but I think you should ask your friend instead.
 
Any big bookstores near you ?

Stores like Borders usually have 3 or 4 Japanese(or any other language) programs for learning. Your local library may have programs you can take out and try.

And there's Rosetta Stone, but I think they're pricey. I also think I saw a commercial for them that has online learning also
 
I use Rosetta Stone and it's pretty effective for learning verbal Japanese. Indeed it's pricey, but I just downloaded mine <shhhhhh!>.

It's pricey, but it works!

And if you're in the US Army, it's free. But I wouldn't recommend that as a reason to join up...or any reason...

I just started last week, and I've already learned alot. Once I'm through with the Japanese Course, I'll start on Korean and Chinese.

Very ambitious, good luck with that!
 
funny thing with rossetta is that you end up learning a lot more than you think you did. Its so different to conventianal learning you may feel for a bit your wasting your time, but end up suprising yourself by how much you can actually understand.
If you support it with more traditional drills and exercises I think its pretty good.
It is pricey though if you dont track down the torrent. Especially as it isn't an total solution in my eyes.
 
Yea, I definitely think you should supplement Rosetta Stone with other learning tools.
 
yeesh but after paying for rosseta you'd need to declare bankruptcy. How can one program be that expensive?
 
Also, you have to decide if you just want to learn to "speak" the language. That can be done quicker than actually learning to read and write.
 
RS has the whole package though, though it's mostly spoken language. AS for the cost, yikes, you said it! That's why I didn't pay...
