Chinese in Kobe?

Hi there,
I was thinking about applying to an internship in Kobe next autumn (although I'm not sure to be selected).
However a friend is somehow scaring me, saying that they really hate chineses there. I really don't know what to answer him since this person went to Japan for a whole year. I do know that mentality varies from a person to another but I've seen myself that it tend to be generally the same within a region.
Is there anyone who can confirm/invalidate what my friend told me?

All I know about Chinese in Kobe is that there's a China Town there.

They have the third largest China town of the country!! so I don't know if they dislike chinese in there. if you are coming to kobe, check my website! maybe you can find some info www.kobecityinfo.com and we could meet up some time!

It's very difficult to be hostile to someone who is acting polite. In Chinese, they say, "禮多人不怪," don't they?? That is the way it is in Japan, too. So, No matter where you are, just try to behave yourself, and respect the local culture and customs. 入境随俗, right??

Well, considering there seems to be so many hostilities between Chinese and Japanese in this forum, it's nice to see a Chinese and Japanese getting along for a change. I am impressed!

Well...I'm not a native chinese and thus don't care but I just don't want to end up in a place where they throw stones at me ^^'
I remember during some of my travels to Hong kong or even to inner China, some people could tell, before I even opened my mouth, that I wasn't a native. Weird thing, considering the fact that I was wearing the same kind of clothes as the other people around my age...

It must be your actions. Well you are born in France right? Yeah so you are probably extremely westernized, and even you said you can speak Cantonese, you must have a different accent from them, that's why they can tell, I thinkﾂ…

For myself I always have the experience of people can't tell I am not one of them until I open my mouth and say so.

Keep us posted about your trip; :128: I would like to hear about it. One of the reasons I still haven't been to Japan yet is because I heard too many stories of them not liking foreigners that are not white, I hope there will be better news to hear in the future.

I don't know what the locals feel about the Chinese, but the China town in Kobe is one of the best tourist attractions there, and Japanese ppl actually like going there, why would they throw stones at you?

I guess Japanese people in Kobe are quite tolerant, because they have been accepting foreign influences. I think you are pretty much westernized, so you should know better how to assimilate into a different environment and culture.

Actually from what my cantonese friends told me I have no accent when speaking cantonese...

As for my trip well...we'll see if I'm selected.
I hope that there won't be any major incident between China and Japan meanwhile...

Well, that's weird. When I go to Taiwan for vacations unless I open my mouth and tell them so they can't tell I am not from Taiwan, that I am just half Taiwanese. The reason I think is because I speak Mandarin just like them, and the reason is because even though I am born in Malaysia but I am brought up in Australia. I rarely speak to my father due to his work, so the only person I really speak Mandarin with is my mother, and she is Taiwanese. The rest like siblings, colleagues, friends and others I speak English with them.

Another ethnic group I got constantly mistaken to be is Japanese. But I don't even speak fluent Japanese or wear their fashion or anything, but they just can't tell by just looking at me until I tell them so.
