Chakushin Ari....Hollywood vultures are at it again

Just surfing around IMDB and found this

Probably won't even keep the original ringtone.

Anyone else getting p!ssed off with Hollywood and its lack of originality? Who would even know of the original? It isn't available in the UK on DVD. The only reason I bought it because it was a Takashi Miike film and I quite like his films. Found it on ebay.

the new ringtone would probably be some polyfonic version of the "Daddy Dj" song....

There were rumblings of similar sentiment in the Battle Royale remake thread.

Battle Royal. . . . . Remake??

Yeah, I know. Did you notice the named director for it? Look at what he has done before. Two films, some shorts and TV episodes. Nine directing jobs in total. Hardly an endorsment of how well they hope it might do. It could almost be a straight to video film.

Remember, there are two parties involved here as well. There is a company who is willing to have its movie remade, to sell it's name & concept to another company, and the company who, avoiding the messy part of actually having to write its own script prefers to go with a 'proven' formula...

Both parties are complicit in the making of this film, both gain from its creation. I never thought that Chakushin Ari was that great of a film, one has to remember that a lot of the movies that Miike does, in fact themselves go straight to video.

It was the greatest Horror Movie I have ever seen. Scary, gory, Great scenes, nice story and a couple of hot chicks (Nagata Anna + Shibasaki Kou is one heck of a nice combo )


Sure it is easier and cheaper just remaking a movie. Also the Japanese directors such as Miike-san would probably see this as a great promotion for his own films, Because Usually America boycuts Japanese horrors for being too bizarre, too brainy(you need your brain to think of the plot and link some of the cool stuff together) or just too gory (and when you think that Hollywood spawned the hellraisers and movies like that?).
Also when people hear that it is a remake, they will hurry to get the original. most poeple do that just to brag about having seen the original, some do it just for getting a lil more info about the new one or people do it for other reasons. No matter what, the director and his company earns a lil extra million dollars or so by selling their old copies aswell as earning an extra good buck on selling the script and copyright.

One Missed Call was not Miike's best film, but to see it being butchered by Hollywood is sickening.

This is just me, but I don't think it's a big deal, certainly nothing worth blowing a gasket over. I mean, look at the boatload of sequeled American made movies, the lack of originality has been an issue for years. Given that Hollywood has to churn out hundreds and hundreds of movies every year, It's a given that they'd search far and wide for stuff to adapt, so originality does indeed suffer. However, it's thanks to Hollywood adaptations of Ringu, Ju-on and others that I developed a taste for the original features, so it does in a way have a benefit. At least it did for me.
