Can someone tell me about Sendai?

It looks like I'll be going there next year for a year of study at Miyagi Kyouikudai. I've already checked google, so I know about the population, geography, etc., but I was hoping someone who has been/lived there could provide me with a little more insight. Is there anything specific I should know? Are there any killer hangouts or attractions? Are the people nice in general? Any reply is greatly appreciated.

i ain't been, but most foreign people i've interviewed seem to like it much more than tokyo. what's a killer hangout in the op's opinion? please be specific about the type of event searching for

I dunno, good bars, restaurants, shopping? I'm pretty much down with anything, except I'm not too big on dance clubs. Do they have a Mitsukoshi, Marui, Takashimaya department store? I like video games, so any arcades or good places to buy games would be nice as well. or if you know of any unique stops that only a place like Sendai will have to offer. It looks like they have a soccer team, but I couldn't find out about any other professional team sports.
