I'm planning to buy a new laptop very soon and I found out that many nb producers in Japan are offering now program called ATOK 2008, which should help you with typing Japanese.

I would like to ask anyone here, Japanese or non-japanese, who has this program to tell me it's small review in a few lines Is it really handy, would it help student of Japanese language, isn't it more like bloatware without reasonable function? What kind of function is the really important one?

Thanks a lot,
eM.

It is just a Japanese form of Microsoft word, there are a few goodies, but I would suggest getting the Japanese version of office. I have ATOK and I rarely use it anymore, it used to be one of the only software programs that catered for kanji but microsoft has surpassed it a long time ago.

Dave, I think you're talking about Ichitaro from Just Systems. It is the Japanese-language word processing software that competes against Microsoft Word. Yes, it has lost a lot of market share today but still is the diehard favorite in government offices.

ATOK is the "enhanced" commercial version of Japanese IME, boasting greater accuracy in kanji conversion, Japanese grammar check and direct link to JJ and JE dictionaries it comes packaged with. It is a great aid for writers in the Japanese language.
I am an ATOK user and like it very much.

However, I doubt its usefulness to beginner- or intermediate-level Japanese language learners. So, it's really up to you to decide.

HTH!

I would call myself as an intermediate-level (2級), so I think I'll give a try. It's just 5000円, not real deal breaker anyway.

So you're saying it comes with some offline JJ and JE dictionaries? I was going to ask which one would be nice to buy...as I'm user of 電子辞書 and online dictionaries, but I would like to have some good one also in my laptop anytime anywhere with me....

I also recommend ATOK. It's far more precise in kana-to-kanji conversion than MS-IME, especially in colloquial expressions. You can download ATOK2008 from the link below, and can use it for 30 days on trial.

ATOK 2008 for Windows [プレミアム] 通常版 is packaged with following dictionaries.

明鏡国語辞典(J-J)・ジーニアス英和(E-J)/和英辞典(J-E) /R.3 for ATOK
会社四季報 企業名変換辞書 for ATOK
『説得できる英文Eメール200の鉄則』文例

Also, there's another version ATOK 2008 for Windows [広辞苑(J-J) 第六版 セット] 通常版.

If you buy ATOK 2008 Premium, it comes with Genius JE/EJ and Meikyo JJ dictionary. Koujien is an option that you have to buy separately.

I think the two are quite satisfactory for quick checks. I have a separate Koujien CD, so I didn't buy that.

Note: I have ATOK 2007 on my XP and ATOK 2008 on my Vista, so I may be confusing the dicitonaries for each version. Please double-check what dictionaries come with the 2008 version!

Edit: Oops! Toritoribe got you the right info!

Thats what I was talking about! I should learn to think before I write...
