Politeness.

arigatou gozaimasu - most polite ("thank you")
arigatou - most casual ("thanks")
doumo arigatou - same as arigatou, but emphasized ("thanks a bunch")

There's also

doumo arigatou gozaimasu - "thank you very much"

The meaning of both words is "Thank you" in this case.

敬語じゃなくても、[どうもすみません」もとても丁寧な言い方で、客に使ったり上司に対して使いますか？ 「Thank you」だけじゃなくて[I'm sorry] の意味も含むので、便利な組み合わせになりますね。

「どうもすみません」は客や上司に対しても使いますが、「どうもありがとう」は客や上司に対しては、普通は使わないですねー……。
客や上司に対しては「ありがとうございます」や「どうもありがとうございます」と言わないと、丁寧なお礼の言い方をしたことにならないのでした。

I have question about when to use.
My friend says I keep getting it mixed up.
I use gozaimashita when she has done something for me (past)
I use gozaimasu when I asker her to do something for me that is ongoing at the moment. (current)
She answered a question for me. I said "~mashita" and she said that wasn't right?

Gozaimasu is what is called a special case . If it's far enough in the past, I think you can only use "mashita," (I think) but as far as I know if it's ongoing or just passed either is grammatical, there is only a difference in politeness (mashita being too formal here ? It must be like saying "Thank you very much" to me for replying here...doesn't that sound funny to you too ?

In this case, I think "ありがとうございました" to be no mistake according to the interpretation.
この場合、解釈によっては「ありがとうございました」でも間違いではないと思います。

解釈１）YOSHIEさんが「hai 」と答えた時点で、あなたの悩みは解決し、疑問は過去のものとなったので「ありがとうございました」という言葉になったとしても、おかしくはない。

解釈２）一連のやり取り全体に対しての感謝なので「ありがとうございました」になったと考えても良い。


もし、以下のような短いやり取りでしたら「ありがとうございます」と答えるほうが適切でしょうけど。

This is saying you should consider the time and effort that was put into whatever you're thanking them for, "-mashita" not being strange for a particularly important or time-consuming effort.
