I'm going to visit Japan in about 40 days with a couple of friends. Unfortunately we do not have any place in Portugal where we can buy the rail pass.

I was wondering if anyone, who has already done all the procedures to get one, could explain their experience. I'm interested in things like how many time did it took to be ready, what documents (if any) you had to present, if you had to be there in person during the application or if you could order by mail or online.

Anything is useful.

JAPAN RAIL PASS | ジャパン・レール・パス and click on Europe. JAL has an office in Portugal that can be used.

I bought mine over the phone/internet. Called the local office (Houston, Texas USA has one, but I was too lazy to drive over), did the paperwork, got the pass in a few days by mail. I assume it's the same process there.

I Actually did check that site before posting. The office in Portugal cannot be used by either me or any of my friends since it is for JAL passagers only, something we are not.

I'm glad you managed to got yours by phone/internet, I was afraid that I would need to present identification or something like that. I'll definitly check if Spain or England have shops with that option.

Thanks for the input!
