1000 Crane origamis

Hi,

Wasn't sure to where post this so I put it here. My friend and I were thinking about how can we help people in Japan in the situation now, and were thinking would it be best to let them know we're with them in spirit.

Without knowing so much about japanese culture I would want to know, would it be considered as rude if we gather ppl around and make 1000 crane origamis with our wishes and names and from what country we're?

We want to do this as an honour to japanese people, but do also want to know, if it's not a good idea?

Safe the few bucks you would spent on the paper and give it to the red cross

I think it'd mean a lot. No rudeness what so ever. The only problem I could see is that:

A. A donation would go further
B. Where would you send it? If you sent it to the Red Cross, I can't imagine them shipping it out to the area when they could use that space in the vehicle for much more necessary stuff, supplies, etc.

well a shopping complex here had the same idea and provided red and white paper for visitors to make origami cranes 2 months ago, the target was also 1000 origami cranes and they would send it to japan. i made 4 cranes hehehe

How old are you? We did a 1000 cranes fundraiser at school years ago. I can't remember what it was for, I don't know if it was for a disaster in Japan. I think it was something to do with a penpal program and funding for something unrelated - I was about 8 so forgive my memory.
Anyway, each student gives a gold coin donation (in Australia, our $1 and $2 coins are a brass colour) to make a crane and write a brief message, which is then sent off. We collected them all together and sent them in one package to save on postage, cranes can fold flat. Can the Red Cross write up some form of certificate or receipt? I mean, something that would go with the cranes to tell the people there you've donated this money for them?
Just one idea.... It could be fun to get your whole school/local community on board.
