I'm new to the neighborhood so I thought I'd say hello. I began a Japanese language class 9 weeks ago. Our instructor is from Tokyo and she uses an "immersion" approach to her teaching. If, on the very first day of class, the only words out of your instructors mouth that are in english are " your first exam is in 3 weeks and it will be written entirely in hiragana (excepting the directions) then chances are you have enrolled in an immersion class. It's amazing how much one can learn when you are forced to. Its a demanding yet satisfying class. 9 weeks later and we've mastered reading and writing hiragana/katakana and quite a bit of basic grammar. Fall behind in this class and you can forget about catching up. Well...... thats my story.

Immersion is a great way to learn a foreign language, although it is overwhelming at the start, as you mentioned.
Study hard and you'll see how quickly you'll improve!

I never got a chance to take a class for Japanese... I don't have the money nor the time to enroll for... when I first learned the kanas, I sat down with a big drawing pad, watched the stroke order of each character on a simple lesson program on computer, and wrote it while saying its sound over and over.
This is what my home-made immersion, hehehe... It's really paid off since, too.
