Archaic English ups the ante on this one!
The friar turned around. He had a low nose, small eyes, and ever so amicable hair of red.
"This?"
"Yes, my leige."
Leaning against the fence, the red-haired friar shook his head. Presently he spoke in his yet unaccostomed Japanese,
"Though it doth pain me to say it, I regret that I can not utter its name to thee."
"I see. Dost thou wish to say that thy grace hast been forbidden to speak of its appellation?"
"Nay, I do not."
"My lord, of late I have received instruction from thy brothers, and as shall be self-evident, I have proceeded to join thee in thy faith. Therefore wilt not thou enlighten me in mine inquiry?"
The merchant, with an air of pride, pointed to his bossom. Sure enough, a cross of brass shone in the sunlight, hanging from his neck. Perhaps the reflected light was too bright, as the friar immediately made a slight wince and averted his gaze toward the ground. Yet without delay, the friar spoke in an ever more friendly fashion. half in jest and half in earnest.
