The Rebellions of the Hogen and Heiji Eras, Edo period (1615–1868), 17th century. Progressing from right to left, the screen illustrates several legendary fighting scenes as narrated in The Tale of the Hogen Rebellion. The rebellion in central Kyoto in the summer of 1156 involved a dispute over succession between Emperor Go-Shirakawa and former Emperor Sutoku.
