The Age Of Aquarium

I know it is going to be a money pit but I am going to set up a home aquarium.

I have checked out all the pet supply sites and the tank itself wouldn't be that expensive. What would cost me is all the equipments like water filters, pumps and lighting fixtures, etc. I just love playing with those things. I would set up another tank just for this purpose. What I do is buy 2 or 3 water filters and clean the water in that extra tank. Then, I would send the clean water into the main tank with the plants and fishes using a pump.

Right now, I am looking at these two books I bought yesterday. They have pictures of all these different tank set-ups using different substrates, plants, decorative items, and animals.

I want 20 -30 schooling fish (Medaka, probably) in it and maybe a few shrimps and loaches. I have always been fond of small catfish like Corydoras in my tanks but I will try to stay away from mixing species from different locations. Yes, when it comes to fishes, I am all for Segregation! I just think the animals display their most natural behaviors in an environment that is most similar to their natural habitat.

A neighbor has a tank that has Guppies, Neon Tetras and a Betta. No, no, no, no, no, NO! That is all wrong!!

What I hate even more are those fake plastic plants and those porcelain ornaments and figures. You've seen them. Treasure chests that opens and closes, Scuba Divers that goes up and down, Pagodas painted the colors of the rainbow....

I am thinking about getting out of work a bit early to go to the mega pet store in town and look at some aquarium stands.

It is starting again..... and it was only a few months ago that I promised myself that I would try to cut back on spending and save.

This is the dawn of the age of aquarius! The age of Aquaaaaaarius!!

I think we always make promises to try and save...but I believe fishies are really quite important to you...so just this once I think you should go for it. Dont think of it as a money sink...its an "investment into your happiness"...or thats how I justify my selfish purchases anyway...lol

Post pictures of it when your finished! I look forward to seeing all your fishies.

How about getting just a small fishbowl and one or two fish?

Fish can be very relaxing to have around. But like any other pet, they can lead to a lot of extra work. Good luck!

One or two fish??? It is like tattoos. You get ONE. You want to get another one, then another one.... before you know it, you end up looking like Tommy Lee (the drummer, not the actor Tommy Lee Jones).

I have a lot of experience in fishkeeping so it won't be that much of a work as far as taking care of the fish goes.

At least guppies don't complain nor scratch your furnitures like some other furry pets do.
