Tacoes

Tonight I had tacoes for dinner. When I was a kid, I used to love tacoes, and I always looked forward to having them, but here in Japan they're a little harder to come by than in America.

Taco shells, for example, can only be found at specialty stores, as well as the seasoning for the meat that I am used to.

Cheese? Hahaha, cheddar cheese is available, but it's expensive and comes in small blocks.

Salsa? Go to the specialty stores.

Because of this, tacoes are expensive to make here in Japan, which explains why this is only the second time I've had tacoes in at least 7 years.

I wouldn't have even made them, but my ex-wife and I bought the mix and taco shells in preparation of our first meal together after we were to move into our new apartment. That, of course, never happened, but it left me with these expensive taco shells and meat seasoning mix. So screw her; I made them myself.

I used a mix of ground beef and pork because it's cheaper than pure ground beef. It was alright, but 100% ground beef is definately better.

For cheddar cheese, I used cheese that I had actually bought as a present for my ex-mother-in-law, but she didn't want my present, so I still had it here. Luckily the cheese was packaged in wax, so it never had the chance to get mouldy.

Unfortunately my taste must have changed in the past 15 years or so, because I have to say that I didn't like them nearly as much as I used to. I have a lot of left-overs.....Guess it's tacoes tomorrow night, too! lol

One of my best friends is hispanic (originally from San Diego) and she misses her mothers mexican food quite dearly. Reading your post made me think of what kinds of foods I would miss when I head up to Nagoya next year...

I think the number one food I would miss is having a good meat pie. Its soooo bad for you but tastes ooh so good.

Good thing I'm not addicted to cheese then. Expensive cheddar cheese! I can only imagine if it was a "specialty" cheese.

Real honest-to-goodness Mexican food is good, isn't it? I remember this bean paste burrito type thing that a coworker used to bring to work at a grocery store I used to work at in America. It was so-o good! Too bad I have no idea how to make it....

Meat pie? It that anything like a pasty?

What foods do you get a craving for?

Sort of! Closely related I suppose...A meat pie is generally a pie made from a savoury pastry filled with minced beef and gravy. Usually there is something else added like Mushrooms or onions...and my favourite is when the top of the pie is omitted and they pipe mashed potato on top and sprinkle a bit of cheese (this variety is called a "Shepherd's pie"). I've also tasted pie filled with kangaroo meat in Queensland and I've tasted Crocodile pie in the Northern Territory.

One particular food I used to crave when I lived out of home...was my mum's beng qiao. There is no standard romanisation for Cambodian so thats the best I could do....lol. The dish basically a pancake made of rice flour with a few pinches of spices...made into an omelette filled with minced pork and red onion or bean shoots. It was generally eaten with Chopped lettuce, corriander, cucumber and this special chili sauce/dressing my mum used to make. I remembered loving it when I was a kid because it was crispy on the outside and all mushy and gooey on the inside. Normally it was eaten cold in the summer but mum used to make it all year round.

mmmmm I'm soooo hungry right now!!!

"So screw her; I made them myself." Ha! Right on, man. Boy, it'd have been awesome if I could head over to the MO pad and scarf down some tacos while watching a movie or something.

Me and my gf eat tacoes pretty often, it's really good food! And the sauce we make is really good too. XD

Homemade sauce...sounds good! I'd ask you the recipe, but I may not make tacoes again for years! lol

OK, you didn't ask ME for a Salsa recipe but here it is. The recipe for THE best Salsa.

Chopped Onion
Chopped Tomato
Chopped Green/Red Peppers
CHopped Cilantro
Minced Garlic
Fresh Lime Juice
Chopped Hot Peppers (Jalapenos if available)
Salt & Pepper to taste
Splash of Olive Oil
*Optional*
Chopped Mango flesh
Grilled Corn (or canned corn)

You might want to "seed" the tomatoes and use just the fleshy part or the Salsa could get too watery. Plum tomatoes seem to work really well.

You don't have to have Tacos to enjoy a good Salsa, ya know? I serve it with grilled chicken and steaks. I even top my salad with Salsa and a dollop of Sour Cream.

Goes great with Burritos, too, of course.
