My trip out to Niigata turned out great. I didn't encounter any major traffic jam nor get lost.
I had not made any concrete plans for this little trip. No hotel reservation. Nothing.

There is something about speeding down a highway knowing at least for the next couple of days, you don't have to be anywhere, do anything. FREEDOM!!!

As it turned out, the weather was great for the first day but not so cooporative the next so I only spent one night in Niigata and came back the next day, but on my way home, I made a little stop in Minakami in Gunma and took a walk through the town, which was just wonderful (the weather was much better once I came out of the Kan-etsu Tunnel).

Here are some of the photos I took during my trip.

Teradomari. A well-known fishing town in Niigata on the Japan Sea.

On the main strip in Teradomari, there are many seefood vendors. It is a big turist attraction and many folks come here by the bus loads to buy fresh seafood.

Boiled crabs. I had two of these for lunch.

Fish-on-a-stick, anyone? How could you just walk on by.... The smell alone got to me and I bought one of the Akauos (Red Fish). It was deeeeelicious!

I would definitely go back there just for the food!

Next up : Minakami!!

Oooh... Teradomari!
That's the destination for shuttle buses from Tokyo for people going to buy fresh seafood! I seriously considered joining one such tour to preprare for the New Year festivities a couple of years ago. I really should be going there!!

Two boiled crabs!! TABETAI~~!!

Wow, so preeetty....that fish looks so good. I looooove crab ><;;;

I'm with Epigene-san: TABETAI!!!!

Yeah, the coastline was really pretty and the drive along the shore was nice but the main attraction for me, the aquarium, was a total let-down. The tanks were dirty and I really felt bad for the 2 dolphines kept in such a small pool. They looked really bored...so sad.
