Hi! 🙂

My name is Adam and im so very interested of japan and tokyo, its almost a sickness 😊

As i live here in Sweden i went on a very short course in japanese language. I only know VERY little... I can say yes and no, and introduce myself. (also some other basic terms)

To my question.

As a foreign guy (of 21) is it difficult to get a job in tokyo? since i dont know very good japanese i know i cant be a millionair but are there jobs that many foreigns take? Like dishwashing? och garbagecollector?
What i wanna know if, is there a way of getting work if you dont know japanese well. (at all o_O)

And what about Ryokans? Is it expensive and how long periods can one stay at these places? I dont want to live at a real hotel, I want to meet people and get new friends. Ryokan would seem the best and the cheapest way i think.. Any other suggestions?

And lastly, how can I get in touch with other people easily? sinice i plan to go alone I really want to meet people and make new friends. Are there certain places where its easier to make connections with people?

Ohh and another question.. sorry :)
Since I dont know good japanese... Are there any possibilities in learning japanese In tokyo? Is it expensive? Its easier for me to learn a language if Im forced to use it. And if i make friends with people then I kinda am :)

Cheers!

THNX

Hey Adam,i cant help you too much. But i can help you abit. They is alof of info on this, about getting jobs in japan. It is pretty difficult as who have to have a degree for certain visa's. Im pretty sure they is jobs without knowing a single word of japanese, but knowing japanese is what you really need to know. IM not very good for information like these, so search abit throught the forums and you will find the answers.
As for the cheapest place to stay, i would go for youth hostel, not very glamourous but it is good enough. I hope to be staying in a hostel near in tokyo. It would get very expensive if you wanted to stay in a Ryokan for a very long time.
You want to have japan friends ? you could use sources on this forum to meet japan friends before you go, i dont know about meeting friends while you are there.

www.japan-guide.com is very good place to contact japanese people in japan.
Sorry i couldnt be as much help. Alot of people know much, much more than me, as i said just search abit throught this forum, u'll prob find the answers.

I think reading some other topics by other people will give you many answers. I think it is good idea to visit for a holiday to Japan before you decide about living here in case it isn't what you are thinking. I lived in London for over two years. When I was in London, I could understand that many people have strange ideas about Japan. Sorry, it's hard for me to explain but sometimes people think Japan is more exciting than it really is. But I hope you can come here if it is your dream.

Not intending to be curt, but I would recommend using the "search" function. You can click on the link in this post, but the search button is always available at the top right of each page.

Happy hunting. :)

I know what you are saying. I also have a view of japan and maybe its not that accurate but there are so many things that i know i would like. As you said, its difficult to express exacly what you like about japan, it would require a whole seperate thread itself (and i think i saw one out there). I have read so much about japan. Talked to so many people. My father even told me that when i was a small child I once said to him that my dream was to go to tokyo one day. So there must be something behind me liking it exept anime and school uniforms. And i know that its not paradise, there are downsides as in all other countries but I am expecting that. Friends of mine are traveling to so many places, London, Argentina, Italy to work but that is not what I seek. I guess its just a matter of preference. I rather skip 3 holidays to Ibiza and rather go to japan and at least try to make it on my own. If it doesnt work out, it doesnt work out..... yet But what can one do more than try to pursue his dreams? It may sound strange for some but thats how it is. And thnx for replying ^^

hey thats cool, that site is very informative!! About the food, i understand that it may get expensive but as a former student i learned how to live on the edge ^^ i managed to survive on 15 SEK(1,98 USD) a day here in sweden.(ramen and stuff:D) I dont require much to be kept running ;) But yes, I understand that everything is different and the prices also are different, I have that in concideration of course. (sorry about sucky english -_-) Thnx!

I know what you mean, i also get frustrated when im on forums on a regular basis, and tell people the exact same thing as you do. But since i am new and im not only here for info (read n' run). I see "making a new thread" as a sort of introduction of myself to become a part of this community and get to know people. I hope u understand but yes, i will use the search function more from now :)

cheers
