Why do Japanese paramedics wear helmets?

Hi,

I would like to know why emergency workers in Japan (i.e. paramedics) are wearing a helmet when they are doing an intervention. Is it because they are affiliated to the fire department? Or is it for a safety reason? Where I am from (Canada), paramedics dont have to wear helmets.

Thank you for your help!

In an area where heavy seismic activity could create a need for response by a paramedic team it is best that those responders are wearing such type of head gear.

Sounds logical, indeed. Many thanks for your reply!
