Where is this? (showing something or pointing on a map)

Is this something people say normally or do they say things like:
"do you know this place" or "where is this place" (showing something to the person you are asking)

So you don't know the name of the location, and want to know it, right? Then これはどこですか can convey what you want to say. I would say これがどこかご存知ですか, この場所の名前、わかりますか or like that, though. (This doesn't work when pointing somewhere on a map, of course, since the location name is obviously on the map.)

It doesn't work well since what you are asking about is too vague. For instance, the one you are talking to might interpret that you want to know the way to go there or you are saying how beautiful it is. You need to make clear what your question is, as in my examples.
