Could someone please explain what type of adjective かわい is? I've seen it been called a な adjective and conjugated as such but also have seem it been called an い adjective and conjugated as such. Me and a friend have come to a complete stand-still on this and have no clue. Save us.

Also, when conjugating い adjectives, the く in the negative conjugations replace the final い of the adjective. However, where does this い come from? The stem? ( If present ) or the い added on from the present tense affirmative conjugation?

Thanks in advance.
