It is that season again when Christmas presents and New Year gifts will be passing in all directions. But what to buy?

According to a Japanese poll - this is what people want to be given in order of rank:

  1. Free-use gift token
  2. Beer
  3. Famous local produce
  4. Catalogue gift token
  5. Ham or sausage
  6. Western-style sweets
  7. Tea or coffee
  8. Soap or washing powder
  9. Complete meal ingredients set
  10. Wine
  11. Domestic alcohol
  12. Fruit juice
  13. Seasonings
  14. Japanese-style sweets
  15. Imported alcohol
  16. Seaweed
  17. Canned goods
  18. Dried salted goods (herring roe, salmon, etc)
  19. Flowers
  20. Soy-preserved foods
  21. Socks, shirts, etc
Come now... who doesn't want gift tokens and beer?

The same poll gives us the flip side - what people DON'T want (and there is some interesting contradictions):

  1. Socks, shirts, etc
  2. Flowers
  3. Soy-preserved foods
  4. Beer
  5. Dried salted goods (herring roe, salmon, etc)
  6. Domestic alcohol
  7. Soap or washing powder
  8. Imported alcohol
  9. Ham or sausage
  10. Seaweed
  11. Seasonings
  12. Wine
  13. Japanese-style sweets
  14. Canned goods
  15. Catalogue gift token
  16. Famous local produce
  17. Fruit juice
  18. Western-style sweets
  19. Complete meal ingredients set
  20. Tea or coffee
  21. Free-use gift token

So, please, unwrap that pair of diamond-patterned socks. No one wants 'em.

But watch out too for beer - liked by some - hated by others.

And, please, someone tell me - what's so wrong with flowers?

Yeah, the packaged specialty meat selections and premium beer sets are real popular here with my friends. KFC gift certificates too so they can have a "traditional" XMas dinner... 8-p

Well - so far - I've had two large bags of pickles. One of which split open and spilt pale yellow liquid down the front of my trousers. Great. I'm placing pickles at number 22.

But a parcel arrived from a distant land and contained a box of six mince pies and one Christmas pudding. Woooo Hoooo! I was so happy!...well I was at first...I had a mince pie tonight and realised how awful they were and how I never liked them in the first place.

But anyway in the small clearing on the edge of the forest I call home there just might be a real Christmas this year!

Roll on more prezzies!
