What's new

What singer or band is on top in Japan at the moment?

I don't think there is a specific one...music tastes are so different there....I guess it would depend on personal music taste as well as fanbase....Gackt, Hikaru Utada etc are usually pretty high up there....

Gackt is definately top-ranking when it comes to general popularity. So is Ayumi Hamasaki. It's a bit more difficult to tell which band is more popular. I'd say Glay, followed on the heels by L'Arc~en~Ciel. Then again, boybands like Smap and Tokio are also very popular. I'm not sure who tops who.

Yeah I would agree to that...I was trying to think of Ayumi Hamasaki.... I agree with the GLAY followed closely by Larku thing as well.

'Rip Slime' were on every magaine when I was there. But when you hear them you wish you were deaf.

Rip Slyme have won 3 MTV-J video awards earlier this year. They're actually doing great things for the Japanese hip-hop scene. As in popularity, they are certainly rising, but they're nowhere near the popularity of Glay. They need a lot more years to get even close and i don't think they will last that long.

Who can tell me about Megumi Hayashibara? is she good?

Megumi Hayashibara is a well known voice-actress, who also happens to sing. I'm not sure what she did first though. She's been around since the early nineties or perhaps even longer.

I want to say it was voice acting first...but don't quote me on that. Psycho le Cemu has gotten quite a bit of popularity as well for an indie band...Pierrot is pretty high up there on the popularity charts as well

😄 Do you know??? are they ther same? or there are news...

Easiest way to find out would be to check the Oricon Charts, or to buy the magazine called "Whats In".

No...I mean it just depends on lots of things as to who's popular...like a decent fanbase and how well the artist/group treats those fans...that and how catchy the music really is. All those factor into the popularity of any musical person or group

I like B'z....I just bought TM Revolution's most recent one and well it's really good so far...I have to get through the full album yet...but so far it's really good...

Well as of RIGHT now, on the radio im always hereing the boybands, which is sad. Smap, Kinki Kids ect.... Also Utada, and Lac en ceil

i would think they are ruining the hiphop scene there makin ppl think that that is japanese hiphop when is actually pop.

hmm i say morning musume, since they seem to be everywhere. Johnny's bands, Ayumi hamasaki, w-inds are also popular.

Nonsense, they're just using different music then the conventional hip-hop artists. I think that's something to be encouraged.

well singing is not one of the hiphop elements, their so called "beats" are some happy melodic shizzle that usually doesnt even have drums etc...haha sure their music is good, but not hiphop IMO.

i used to have the same opinion about them as you but as i learnt more about japanese hiphop scene, my opinion changed a lot. over 400 hiphop acts in Japan, some very talented mcs and djs, so when i listen or watch rip slyme.... i see nothing but screaming teenage girls lol

im not saying they are bad, oh well different strokes for different folks.

Ayu and Morning Musume (and their split bands) I don't see falling off their top platform anytime soon.

I listen to so many mid-class artists (Nana Katase, SME, GIZA artists - though Mai usually sells high, Porno Graffiti, etc.) that I hardly pay attention to who's on top in popularity.

Rip Slyme reminds me sort of a much classier version of Nelly with poppy hip-hop, not sure if that's a compliment...

i currently listening to Morning Musume and Kinki Kids...i think their songs are quite good...other than that,,Speed and Dream.
