Well, you do have your goals set... um high :/

I guess I would go about it this way. Get damn good grades in highschool, get damn good grades in a community college in your area (you'll probably only get in through a transfer program). Then do daaaamn good in learning the Japanese language so you can understand what is being taught, then do daaaaaaaaamn good at...

You get the point. Many Japanese have problems getting into unversities. A foriegner is going to have a slightly difficult time as you can guess. I would go to Tokyo Universities site and try to get ahold of someone and ask them. Best way to get info.

My dad tought once once at To dai (tokyo daigaku) and he is a collage teacher so he knows a lot about collage maybe i can hook you up with him and see what you get. The to dai campus is excellent and has nice stores around it and stuff is quite cheap there.....but first of all can you explain how much japanese you know and how good your high school grades are?

I am just learning Jap. I have an A in all my classes (honors student 👍 ) and i'm only startoing my second year of highschool.

If you are "planing" to go to "collage" at Tokyo University, you need to come up with another plane instead.

Well that was kind of crappy Mike

Want to explain why that was necessary Mike?

I believe he (she?) was asking for advice, not masked insults and condemnation. You effectively just told him he was doomed to fail.

Yes, it is going to be extremely difficult, however he is still in highschool and you don't even have to enter the college directly out of highschool. There is plenty of community college programs that he could make it to Tokyo from if he decided to truly work for it. It is up to him to decide if he wants to put the effort into it, all he did was ask advice on where to start.

I don't believe he asked for grammar errors to be pointed out and for him to be mocked by a guy on a forum.

Thanx. and i'm a girl. i kno it's gunna be hard work and it's somthing i really want to do. i'm willing to do what it takes to get into this school. Even my teachers at school want to help me get into the school, but i want to kno wut i need to do to prepare, like what to study more than otherthings.

Well, you need to contact someone in Tokyo University to see what they say and their requirements. From there, you need to set up your plan to reach that goal, which will most likely be a transfer from a community college.

You are still VERY young at this point so you have a head start if you are headed this direction, but few people really know what they are going to be doing 10 years from now, not even their major in college usually!

If you can, see if you can find a way to get into a beginning Japanese course at a community college through your school. Might not be possible, but I promise you it's better than any public school language program crap they have usually. Finish up highschool, focus on your English and Japanese skills (notice I said both, you MUST have practice with languages in general, not just Japanese!) and keep your grades high and your eyes open for what is next.

Most of all, get as much info as you can, and ask around like crazy. Let me know if you have any questions I might be able to answer.

Thanx for the help. I really apricate it and i will look into it all. this is my dream to go there, it has been for years. I hope i get in someday so i can study Medical science. I want to help people there. my cousen lives near tokyo and he said he would help in any way he could. i'll see if he has friends that go there. thanx again for the help Emoni.

Whew, then you have a very long and very difficult road ahead of you then if that is what you are really going to do. My sister is headed for a nursing degree, and it is far from simple. To go into medical science IN Japan...

I recomend you really look into it, and don't decide on anything yet. That doesn't mean you can't work towards what you want to do, simply don't set anything in stone without constant research. I also recomend sometime visiting Japan to see how you like it after you learn a little Japanese to get by.

I don't want to be mean, but I agree with Mike, it seems doubtful that she would be able to get into TU as she needs to be able to speak/read/write Japanese fluently but appears to have problems spelling in her own language.

However, nothing is impossible if you work hard enough. It would be a good idea to contact TU and find out how foreigners can enter so you can work towards the right goals.

Considering she has still highschool to finish and lower level college English courses, there is nothing to worry about. Believe it or not, when I was younger my English wasn't as good as it was now either! ;)

Imagine that!

You and I have something in common then. 🙂

yeah I have that in common as well!! Only been studying japanese for five months

I don't know how much you know about Japanese University. Can I say that Tokyo University is the top university in Japan. It is like Harvard in the US or Oxford in the UK. Even many of the smartest Japanese can't get in. Yes you also need to understand Japanese and read and write Japanese. All your work and most of your books will be in Japanese. However, if you can get scholarship you will get fees paid plus money for living. Also you will get 1 year of free Japanese tuition before you start your major.

One more thing. Sorry to say this, but please could you not use the abbreviation "Jap" when talking about Japan, Japanese people, or Japanese language. It is quite offensive to many of us. Thanks!

Because I'm a cantankerous s.o.b. And that's on my good days.
I believe he (she?) was asking for advice, not masked insults and condemnation. You effectively just told him he was doomed to fail.

When you put it that way.....yeah. I did. Can't see how my meaning got masked, though. I mean, I set it off in quotation marks and everything.

She wasn't talking about aTokyo university. She's talking about Tokyo University. Big big big danged difference.

Japanese kids who hope to enter Toudai generally start at kindergarten (if not earlier) with a life devoted to very little other than extremely intensive study. The only thing Japan has ever seen more fierce than the competition for entry to that school was the Battle of Iwo Jima. "Gee I wanna go" just don't cut it.

And I believe the language requirement is JLPT1, not JLPT2. Wouldn't swear to it, though.

^^ He has a point. I know Japanese people who are aiming at going into (THE one and only most prestigious) Tokyo University who have spelling and grammar of a better standard.

JLPT1 is pretty strict but I guess if they expect you to take lectures in Japanese is would be essential. I cant see the point of doing this tho, I would prefer to learn in a language that I have the firmest grip on (English) or study to improve another language (Japanese) in an environment where I am able to get answers to any questions I have (ie, In english).

That is nice of you Mike.

Sorry then Mike. I guess I just don't get the same enjoyment of mocking young highschool girls on internet forums as you do.

Is Tokyo University hard to get into? You're damn straight it is! Can she make it there? That is totally dependant on if she works for it, and it won't happen till after a great deal of study and work.

Honestly, I don't think it is even WORTH it unless you are simply going there anyway. You can get the same (if not better sometimes) education elsewhere in Japan, and in America too.

However, she asked for advice on how to get there. She didn't ask to be insulted by forum members, and for a whole bunch of "You'll never make it"s. She asked a question and I answered it. I simply gave her the advice she was asking for, and that is all. As for her spelling, that is no problem what-so-ever and after one year of community college. She will be perfectly fine in that area.

One of the reasons why these forums are so good, is because I know that when I post a question myself, I'll get nothing but help. If I have to look forward to more "Mikes" who will jump in and rip apart every post for no reason other than to just troll and flame, then screw it...

If you want to be a jerk to kids trying to plan their future at a college Mike. Go look around your area. I'm sure there are plenty of highschools you could visit in the area. Hey, maybe you could make the step up to grade school flamer *ahem* "advisor" next year.

Yup. Real impressive...

You've made your point. Now either go whining to the moderators and have me banned from the forums, put me on your ignore list, or bugger the hell off already.

dude, not everyone can go around and sugercoat stuff.. someone has to lay it out straight!

and the point is, even if she is an honour student, she's spelling her name and college wrong, right?.. why not help her find an alternative to todai as soon as possible instead of fooling her into thinking she'll get into tokyo high?

although she DOES have a chance, it's about as slim as a starving ethiopian.

You're doing her a disservice by telling her to aim for todai imo..

I just thought it was inappropriate and cruel. Just because it's 'how mike works' it doesn't make it ok. But let's just draw a line under it eh?

Mocking highschool students asking questions on the forums is obviously not the right way to go about it.

Also, I never recomended that she aim for Tokyo University. All I have done tell her what she needs to look into next to find more information and a small bit of what to expect. She's still very young, and is really going to be only looking at her options at this point. She'll make up her own mind, all I did was give the info.

I however, didn't mock and insult her, and there was no value what-so-ever to her by doing that.

This forum is for Japanese information and topics. Last time I checked, it does NOT exist for Mike to put on a persona and insult posters as he please, just because "that is what he does."
