Views from the street: The Police

Question For Those In Japan Now????

Are young people still afraid of the police? Most of the croud at the bar I worked at were young hoodlum types, always acting macho & tough. It seemed everytime I saw an arrest made by Japanese police, the youngsters were crying & shaking. Maybe they were afraid of their parents reactions, or going through the legal system; whatever the fear was , they were terrified of something? The police in Fukuoka were baton happy also, always wacking someone while talking to them. This was in 70-71, so maybe it's different now?

I never had any problems, but I guess they expected college kids to be rowdy...especially in groups of 20 or more. Even as a foreigner, I definitely felt safe without perceiving a strong police prescence...I guess it's because it's the foreigners usually causing the trouble.

I DID see a young Japanese guy chased down an alley and choked...that was sort of thrilling.
