A fascinating video depicts the development of the Japanese railway network over 150 years.

In 1872 the first railway line was opened in Japan. This connected Shimbashi station in Tokyo with today's Sakuragicho station in Yokohama. The rail network then developed rapidly and was repeatedly modernized and adapted to the needs of travellers. The people of Japan are very proud of their railway and have come up with some actions to celebrate the 150th anniversary. A Japanese Twitter user has now used his imagination and technical know-how to create an elaborate video showing the development of the country's train stations. It shows the stations chronologically in the order in which they were commissioned. A small point of light represents each station. The two stations in Tokyo and Yokohama will start. A short time later, more lights will be added in Osaka and west of Hokkaido .

Other videos show the regional development of railways. Hokkaido's railway system saw growth and decline with the rise and fall of the coal mines. Other videos show the development in Tohoku, Kanto, and western Japan.
