Emperor Akihito turns 69 today and he should be pleased to learn that 86 percent of people in an Asahi Shimbun opinion poll conducted earlier this month say they are in favor of the current imperial system in which the emperor is the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people.

Emperor Akihito ascended to the throne on January 7, 1989. For many years, the Emperor has conducted taxonomic studies in gobiid fishes. As a member of the Ichthyological Society of Japan, Emperor Akihito has published 26 papers in the Society's journal and has written 200 accounts of gobiid in a book published in 1984. He authored another book on gobies in 1993. Emperor Akihito is an honorary member of the Linnean Society of London, a research associate of the Australian Museum, and an honorary member of the Zoological Society of London. The scholarly monarch is an advocate of natural conservation.
