teacup (no really)

I was looking around for some tea cups, and there seem to be two sorts: bowls and cups. Does anyone know which one is used for which teas?

maybe it's like starbucks, you have a choice of small medium or tall? lol the japanese restaurant I was in the other night used traditional tea cups (slighty rounded and no handle) to serve their green tea. Hope that helps
