I cant figure this out...

I would imagine it is really from 1943 because it was presented to my grandfather (a colonel in the army) ,by the governor of Hokkaido, during the American occupation of japan. Thank you for the translation :)

That is both a relief (glad you didn't get swindled, as many do) and appalling (that's wretched writing).

昭和十八年三月

I think the other is 勝心

Yeah but the sword was supposedto have been made more than a century ago..... oh well. Thanks again for the help

The only thing you can be sure of is that it was made before it was handed to the Colonel and has March 1943 engraved on it.

Majestic - my sword looks just like the second link, not the first one. Katsumasa you say? What makes you say that? Because of the date engraved on it?
I was going to get the sword appraised but its probably not worth as much as I thought.

Looks in reasonably good condition. I think it may be worth an appraisal. First thing is to take care of it, and make sure you don't touch the blade with your bare hands and fingers, lest you risk any rust developing from moisture coming from your hands. There are sword-cleaning kits you can buy, but if you don't know what you are doing you might risk damaging the blade, your fingers, or clogging up the scabbard with sword-cleaning powder and oil. Don't be tempted to swing it or to try and cut something with it - treat it as an antique now, and not a prop from Saturday Night Live. In Japan there are a number of places you could get it appraised, but I'm not sure who could do it for you in your area. You might also try your luck on the Nihonto Message Board. There are a few bona fide experts on that board, and they can give you more information than I can.
