You can even sign up for their "Word of the Day" in whatever language you want. I think the BBC also has a section on learning other languages online. You might give that a try.

dor jieh (Cantonese)
shieh shieh (Mandarin)

both means 'thank you',and those are the 'words of the day' from me to you

🙂

Dream Time,

You're welcome! I knew how to say "thank you" in Chinese--"shieh shieh"--but I had no idea how it was written or that it was Mandarin! How would I say "you're welcome" in Chinese?

ng sai hak hey (Cantonese)
boo yung hak chi (Mandarin)

ya I know that some Westerners don't know whats the difference of Mandarin and Cantonese,
when they ask me : 'how to say this in Chinese?'
I ask them : 'which kind of Chinese? Mandarin or Cantonese?'

And thank you very much in Mandarin is "Fei chang gan shieh", right? What are the first three words? Zhe yong [Mandarin] zen me jiavng? (How do you say this in Mandarin?). It's great fun learning a few phrases here and there at least to use at Chinese restaurants ;).

Dream Time ~ Shieh shieh!

Elizabeth ~ That's where I use the phrases too--at Chinese restaurants! I love surprising waiters by saying something in Chinese. They're shocked and yet love it at the same time!

We have several Chinese members at the new Buddhist forum, E-Sangha, as well as at the Tao Speaks forum. I'll have to try some of these phrases on them and surprise them!

Thanks again, Dream Time!!

"fei sheung gan shieh"

"fei sheung" means "very"
"gan shieh" means "grateful"

this is used when someone did something to help you, like donations

one of the very important things while eating in Chinese restaurants,
is that,learn to use chopsticks,
I've noticed that many Westerners don't use the chopsticks properly

and I've seen some Westerners uses the chopsticks like a fork...

Dream Time,

I'm afraid I fit into that category of not having enough experience with chopsticks. Most people I know know how to use them just fine, but even though I have been shown how, I inevitably end up with food in my lap and NOT in my mouth!! :D Pretty pathetic, I'm afraid. I will keep trying, though ... !! 😄

a week ago I went to a Japanese restaurant with a western female friend and her friends (my female friend is Spanish,by the way)

they just could not use the chopsticks properly and they sometimes end up with sushis on the table or they squished the sushis

I showed them how to use the chopsticks and they had trouble learning it,
my Spanish friend said : 'well I've been using them in the wrong way for a couple of years already so it does not matter..'
I said : 'maybe you girls should pick the sushis by hands...'
the other friend said to me: 'I think you have a point...'
then I said : 'well I also had trouble with it when I was a kid..'

then I said : 'well I also had trouble with it when I was a kid..'

Well, that makes me feel better! Sometimes I can get it, so I think I just need lots of practice!! ... but maybe I should practice at home first before taking the "show" on the road!! :D
