Hi. I am interested in learning Japanese. I have travelled to Japan and learned some (very) basic words and sentences etc, and would be interested in continuing. I have studied Mandarin for about 5 years in my own time, and have a growing interest in learning Japanese too. However I know that learning both together presents its problems.

Should I have a tutor given my low ability? I don't live in a large city to go to a Japanese class and I have found some reasonably priced tutors online. I have a Mandarin tutor, however I get more out of these lessons as I can just speak mandarin for 1 hour without English.

Any thoughts on anything I've said/asked would be appreciated! Thanks.

Hard to say because everybody's different. Some people can stay motivated independently, some need this kind of help. Some tutors are better than others etc. My opinion: if money is not a concern, give it a shot and see how it goes.
