Did anyone here play Shenmue? Its Japanese setting made it irrestible for me as Im sure it would for all others on this board. I strongly recommend it as well as the underrated sequel which, although set in Chia, retains a fantastic eastern appeal. Ganbatte!

I've played both games, and have gone back into each a countless number of times just to explore more of the game's environment. Both are very good games. Yu Suzuki and his team at AM-2 did a marvelous job on them.

If you happen to own a Dreamcast, you should look into importing the European release of Shenmue II for the DC, which kept it's original Japanese dialogue and added English sub-titles.

Yer, the american voicovers on the xbox version werent great. I wasnt too bug a fan of the ending of 2. What did you think? Didnt seem to really fit in with the theme of the game previsouly. Still, cant wait for 3. Please release it Yu!!!

Good god, I loved the ending of Shenmue II! It reminded me of certain feelings I'd get when I watched Indiana Jones movies as a kid. Good stuff!

Having never seen the Indiana Jones movies i wouldnt share your sentiments. Y'know when you have to get $500 for to see Ren, did you just keep beating up that savage guy? Hahaha! What a fantastic character!

That's exactly what I did. :D

I loved fighting with the street fighters. Since SII didn't offer you many chances to spar or practice, it was the best way to build up Ryo's skills.

I started up the first Shenmue again last night and was blown away all over again... It's a shame that the video game industry is locked in this sequel/rehash/liscenced mode of operations right now. Oh well, eventually it will all come tumbling down after people get tired of the same crap over and over...

Anyway, PLAY THIS GAME!! I can't stress it enough. BEST. DAMN. ADVENTURE GAME. EVER!! Yu Suzuki and his team created these games because they wanted to show people what their countries (Japan and China) were like. There's so much that they were able to cheat and get inside their game set in the mid-1980's. Please do yourself and pick these up. :)

Capcom is working on a game that has very similar visuals (from what I've seen) and is a murder mystery set in earliy 20th Century Japan. Check out more details in an older article I wrote here.

Yeah, Shenmue rocked! I had that title on my beloved Dreamcast back in the day and remember it being really the first fully-realized cinematic environ you could just totally immerse yourself into. If you ever wanted to show off and impress your non-video gaming friends at the time, this was the title to do it with, heh. Never played the sequel although if I ever get the chance i'd love to try it.
:D

This is the best game I've ever played. Although I do not own a DC, I've managed to finish the first CD of the first chapter at my friend's.
This game is amazing, I just couldn't stop playing it. The enviroment, the little details, everything is so perfect that keeps you playing more and more.
Just one question: if the story is set in 1986(?), why does Ryo own a Sega Saturn console?

There are little things like that in the game (or finding Virtua Fighter figures in vending machines, etc) that have no place in a 1980's setting. Still, who's complaining? You get to play Sega Saturn Space Harrier and Hang-On on his Saturn! :)
