I was wondering if anyone could suggest a database or something similar to the NCJRS we have here in the U.S. but for Japan. The National Criminal Justice Reference System provides scholarly literature on many criminal justice issues and while they do have a comprehensive section on International issues, there are none to my knowledge re: Japan.

The reason I ask is because I am currently working on a project for one of my classes concerning violent crime in Japan and one of the criterion for this class is I must come up with at least twenty-five (or more) scholarly journal articles. Specifically, books/texts, dissertations and theses as well as journal articles and research reports. While I am familiar with the annual White Papers they don't really provide me with the info I am looking for. Newspaper articles while certainly informative are not considered scholarly by my professor therefore I have been having trouble finding a good source of information. Any suggestions any of you may have would be greatly appreciated. I have also included a link to the NCJRS so that you may see what sort of database I am looking for.

Again, what I am specifically looking for is scholarly information concerning violent crime in Japan that is accessible via the web ala NCJRS style. Thanks in advance.

Hm, I actually doubt there's anything comparable to NCJRS. Also, the White Papers rank among the most "scholarly" publications on criminal justice you'll be able to find online. A few of the older articles I listed in this forum have been taken from law journals.

Here are few other resources:

World Factbook of Criminal Justice Systems (Japan)

Criminal Justice System in Japan: present situation and issues

=> http://www.eu.emb-japan.go.jp/interest/crimju.htm

http://arapaho.nsuok.edu/~dreveskr/jap.html-ssi

Criminal Justice Resources for Japan

=>http://arapaho.nsuok.edu/~dreveskr/jap.html-ssi (most of the resources are outdated or return broken links)

National Police Agency

=> http://www.japanreference.com/cgi-bin/jump.cgi?ID=586

Most of these resources are very general and just list articles, but no databases.

Japanese Law Resources at Duke University

=> http://www.japanreference.com/cgi-bin/jump.cgi?ID=710 (they list a few Japanese databases)

Japanese Legal Research

=> http://lib.law.washington.edu/eald/jres.html

Probably you were already aware of these links. Tell me if you stumble across something more substantial.

:)

Excellent! Thank you very much for your time and effort on my behalf to help me with my project. I am familiar with some of the links but some of it is new to me and will be useful towards my project. I'll continue digging around to see what other resources might be avilable out there, thanks again 🙂
