even though pimsleur has been extremely helpful, i still fear that i am learning proper japanese and not real native japanese. does anyone here have any suggestions as to how to remedy this?

thanks but i don't see myself going to live in japan for a year. i will visit sometime in the future but that's all for now. i am learning japanese because it was and is a challenge.

now since i don't plan on doing that, do you have any other advice?

kidnap lots of japanese people and keep them in your apartment.. their screams of terror might contain some real japanese.. other than that, no.

I don't believe getting one japanese friend and talking to him / her will help all that much, so i don't really have any ideas =/

You've got some great advice there Mac. Patent it and write a book. "Learning languages by kidnapping", could make you rich... 👍

lol...thanks people.

actually what i did was join a group that meets once every month to practice japanese and i am going to start buying and renting japanese movies, music and etc just to get around the language more. i just hope that this group has some people in it much more advanced than i am otherwise it will be a huge waste of time.

I would say definitely watch Japanese movies and TV shows, anime, etc. Especially some of the newer stuff. I once heard that Japanese is changing so rapidly that if a Japanese person were to leave Japan and go back a year later, they wouldn't be able to understand some of the language. I'm not sure how much that is still happening, though.
