Quick question about typing kana

I'm having trouble figuring out how to type posts in hiragana/katakana/kanji. How do I do this?
Btw, if this is in the wrong forum, sorry. I can move it to where it belongs if necessary.

Have a look here first Declan's Guide to Installing and Using Microsoft's Japanese IME - Windows 7, Windows Vista, XP, 2000 and if that doesn't answer your questions (e.g. if you don't use Windows) come back.
