Question Question about 多い

Please look at the following sentence:
湖に多くの魚がいる。
Why is the の necessary there? It is an い adjective so why can’t I just put it right next to 魚?

多く is a noun there.
e.g.
学生の多くが休んでいる。
従業員の多くをクビにした。
患者の多くに回復の傾向がみられる。

多い can be used as an attributive only when in a modifying clause.
e.g.
注文の多い料理店
留学生に多い言い間違い
