Hello,

Please help me with proper うれられてしまいました translation in the sentence below:

よくばりじいさんは ろうやに うれられてしまいました。

Maybe I can translate it as:

"Greedy old man was sent to the jail".

I could only find then うれられる (can sell) is the potential of うれる.
But i am not sure if "to sell" is appropriate verb for the translation. Even more,
as opposed to potential form, て しまう denotes that action already completed.

Thank you very much!

Are you sure there isn't a typo in there or something? It seems strange that うれる would be made passive, since it's not transitive in the first place, and none of its meanings make any sense that I can tell. If it's not a typo, I have no idea.

I am very sorry. Indeed, it is typo. Sentence really should be like:

よくばりじいさんは ろうやに いれられてしまいました。

If possible, could you please explain why いれる was conjugated to potential form.
Why not いれてしまいました used instead.

Thank you very much!

That's not a potential but a passive.;-) They are the same in ichidan verbs.

EDIT:
Oops, you beat me, Glenn-san.🙂
