I read on a japanese language website www.yamassa.org that a student will need a personal guarantor in order to obtain a student visa and school in japan, now is there a way to bypass this requirement or is it compulsary?

Since most students are minors, no there is no way I know of to get around this. Usually the personal guarantor is the school itself or a host family in some rare programs, so this shouldn't be a problem.

Its a compulsary requirement. It means that you need to have a school that will accept you before coming to the country.
