I was watching NHK news today and I did an impromptu survey of the coverage of the important events that occured today in the world. My results are as follows:
Number of seconds devoted to the war in Iraq, the middle east peace process and the global economic downturn combined: 15
Number of seconds devoted to the recent weight gain seen on the seal known as Tama Chan: 120
This doesn't seem to be a healthy balance of coverage for the national broadcaster to be providing. I wonder if this is a cause of or a result of the Japanese public knowing so little about the outside world in general.
