A sister thread to the one you can find in the music Chit Chat. Instead of getting no end of new threads asking for recommendations, this is a place for newbies to browse and the anime/manga fans to post their favourites or new ones that they recommend. Same rules as the music version, try not to go offtopic too much.
My Recommendations would be:
Gunslinger Girl: Both anime and manga. An excellent series. Both tragic and brilliant storyline. This anime and manga will move you emotionally.
Azumanga Daioh: One of the funniest manga and anime series that I have read. Suitable for all ages.
Akira: The definite anime and manga. This is the anime film and manga to read and see. Otomo Kutsuhiro is the anime God.
Anime:
Ghost in the shell: Both the two films and the series. The film rates with Akira as the best.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Believe it when people tell you that this is an excellent series. The only minor gripe is Shinji and his whining.
Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040: Thisa is opne of my personal favourites and prefer it over the original. The original is good, but the storyline in this is better and the animation superior to the original.
Elfen Lied:This is one of the best and most shocking anime I have seen recently. I would not recommend this for children in any way. Well wriiten and shockingly violent.
Studio Ghibli: Just try anything from this animation studio and you will not be disappointed. My favs are Naussica, Spirited away, Porco Rosso and The Cat Returns. They are not all aimed at children either. Grave of the Fireflies will shock you, depress you and move you. Whisper of the Heart and Only Yesterday are aimed at adults.
Manga:
Love Hina: Funny, entertaining, light hearted.
Immortal Rain: One of the recent discoveries I have made and I really like it. The entire series hasn't been released yet, not in the UK anyway.
Chibi Vampire:Better known as Kain in Japan, but Tokyopop have decided to rename it as Chibi vampire. Again this is a recent discovery I have made and I find it funny. Only up to volume 3 in the UK. Total number is 10 so far.

Chibi Vampire or Karin the anime was funny :D
Neon Genisis Evangelion i saw than when i was young so it was a bit confusing =/
elfen lied? i saw it : D nice anime
if u really want shocking you must see Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni

I liked 'Fruits Basket', but it got boring in some places. Love hina the anime is awesome, but they overuse the 'Punch character flying cos he is a pervert' joke, and it can be shallow, but it is quite funny a lot of the time!

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya wiki
I've only seen a bit of this, but if you're a fan of Azumanga Daioh, this should float your boat.

FLCL wiki
Probably one of the more interesting and unique anime I've seen before (oh, animes is not propper, it's simply anime...) music is a big part of this anime, and the series music is performed by popular band, The Pillows.

Mai Hime wiki
Think perhaps, x-men, but with Japanese girls... Mai Hime, is "My Princess..."...

Renkin 3-kyū Magical ? Pokān wiki
This is a pretty big "fan-service" anime, if you don't know what fanservice is, expect a lot of gratuitous panty-shots, and what not, but it's pretty funny and good for a laugh... it's not horendous to watch... it's about a group of girls, a robot, a werewolf, a vampire, and some sort of witch, uh I guess, who live in a treehouse and well... you know...

Oruchuban Ebichu wiki
This Anime is a tad ecchi, but still quite funny, when you consider it centers around a house-cleaning hamster who uses the burikko style word "dechu", or simply chu~~ constantly... It involves her care of her master, an OL (office lady) and her boyfriend problems, and the problems that ebichu causes for them...

Jagainukun link
This short children's series is adorable.... all of the characters have names which are plays on the Japanese language... Jagainukun is a dog, which is essentially a potato, so his name is a combination of the words for potato & dog... it's adorable, and shouldn't be missed, even for adults.

Perfect Blue wiki Possibly one of the best feature-length anime films in existence, it details the life of a an ex-pop idol as she moves into the world of AV (pornography) and finds that she has a mysterious stalker, and soon, a dual personality out to kill... brilliant.

Patlabor wiki
All I'll say is probably one of the most important anime created... concerning the control of robots rebuilding a future Tokyo & those controlling those robots... it is cannon in the world of anime.

Love Hina wiki
Love hina is THEE typical Harem-anime... boy is sent to be in charge of obaasan's onesn, & yet, he has to deal with all manner of female characters who tempt, torture or look up to him.... the prototype harem anime.

Super Gals! Kotobuki Ran wiki
This was one of my more favourite anime, though I've only seen 3-4 episodes.... It concerns the life of Gyaru in Shibuya competing for turf, and the side-adventures of those who know them...

Marmalade Boy wiki
This was probably one of the first serialized anime that I had ever watched, it 's a typical shoujo animes where a seemingly affected boy woos the heart of a normal girl by his purity of mind and spirit... it's a sweet love story for girls, but a classic, in my mind...

okay thats it for now, i'm tired of typing.

Here's some from me.

Anime:

Robotech
Slayers
Dragon Knight
Tokyo Godfathers
Millennium Actress
G Gundam
Gundam 0083

Manga:

G. I. Joe: Arashikage Showdown
Akira

The Meloncholy of Suzumiya Haruhi (窶氾≫?ケ{ニ地ニ停?ケニ智窶堙娯?寧ナクT/Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu): Hilarious and can be perverted at times.

Fullmetal Alchemist (ツ鋼窶堙戸廝窶ケテ?ツ術ナスt/Hagane no Renkinjutsushi): AWESOME storyline! If you want action, a DEEP storyline, and a hyperactive short kid with amazing alchemic abilities, you NEED Fullmetal Alchemist! Definately, #1! Hands down!

Rurouni Kenshin (窶堙ゥ窶堙ォ窶堋、窶堙嫁停?「ツ心): Like samurais? This is for you!

Bleach (ニ置ニ椎?ツーニ蛋): A LOT of action! Very good storyline, as well.

Elfen Lied: If you like blood, and an interesting storyline then this anime is for you.

Nodame Contabile: Into drama or classical music? This is for you.

Beck: Eh, this is an okay anime. It would have been better if they followed the manga a bit more devoutly. This anime is about an indy rock band in Japan. The drama is nice, so check it out.

Hellsing Ultimate: This is closer to the manga than the original series, and for that reason alone, I reccomend it above the original series. The 3rd episode of it was just fansubbed, so check it out sometime.

Inu-Yasha: Y'know, this anime is apparently overrated. I started watching it when it first aired on Adult Swim. I loved it for drama, romanticism, and characters. Everyone has probably watched it already though. I'm not ashamed to admit I love this anime. :p

Ghost in the Shell series: There is a new movie coming out in June. I reccomend everyone check it out. There will apparently be more content in the series after the third movie too, so I'm happy to say I'm a fan of this manga, anime, and movie series. Science fiction is always amusing to watch, or read. :p

Claymore: "Youma's" are running around causing trouble. They can't be killed by humans because they can disguise themselves as the people they eat. To combat them, a secret society put youma parts into female soldiers, thus creating Claymore's. These claymore's are identified by their silver eyes, and large sword carried on their back. This is a very interesting, and dark anime. I reccomend it to anyone who was a fan of Beserk, or Hellsing.

Bleach: I don't think I need to say anything else about this anime. Watch it.

It depends on what you're interested in.
If your interested in samurai then I would recommend Samurai Deeper Kyo and Peacemaker.
If your interested in love stories then I would recommend Fishigi Yuugi (Mysterious Play) and Marmalade Boy.
If your interested in demons then I would recommend Inu Yasha , Descendents of Darkness, Gigamesh and Hellsing
What I found most interesting is that some of these stories are full of historic references: Samurai Deeper Kyo, Peacemaker and Gilgamesh
Most of these also have manga as well.
Have fun experimenting. There is so much Anime and Manga to enjoy.
Some of the Manga has been translated to English by fans and are online to enjoy. There are also fanfics that can be enjoyed as well. These have nothing to do with actual story except for the characters.

Some time ago I finished watching "Full metal panic" . It was to much not realistic. However , next season "Full metal panic?Fumofu" was really fun with a lot jokes . If you didn't watch it ,than , I think, you have to do it.

Samurai Champloo! :) It's the best anime, I've watched. I am a HUUUGE FAN! Well... It's directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, he also directed Cowboy bebop(I like that one too :) )

Guys (and gals), if you give a list of anime, can you give a brief description about that anime, or at the very least a wiki link so people know why they might want to watch it.

I'm a junior member and I am not allowed to give links yet and if more information is needed then I can expand on what I said if asked.

Even a one line synopsis is good... There is so much anime, in so many genres, its hard for those unfamiliar to know the why or what the anime is about.

It looks like Girls Bravo, a Harem-Anime was marked, not Galaxy Angel.

Magister Negi Magi (Negima!) - The story centers around the young British wizard, Negi Springfield, and the trials he goes through in his search for his long-lost father, the Thousand Master. After graduating as a wizard, he is assigned to become a High-School teacher in an all girl academy in Japan. Upon arriving, he befriends(?) Asuna Kagurazaka, a student in his class. From the very start, young Negi is put through various tasks that will test him, not only as a wizard, but as a teacher. Negima! contains all of the comedy and romance of Ken Akamatsu's other works, but with an unprecedented amount of action and magic. I highly recommend it.

I would honestly tell people to watch Naruto. Especially episode 101... you don't even need to have seen any Naruto before to watch that one. The entire episode consists of the three main characters, Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura, trying to get Kakashi's mask off. Kakashi is the one on Clawns picture above. lol.
