I'd put a verb before 大学 since otherwise it ounds like 大学 belongs to 山田
あそこは山田さんの通う大学です。

Yes. That's acceptable in the same sense as 私の国 or 私の町, since it's uncommon that someone possesses a university (or country or town, of course).
