I studied Farsi at elementary school, ages ago and just for one year. I recall "bicycle" دوچرخه and "Are you well?", something like حال شما خوب

And I can still count to ten.

I will always remember Farsi as a wonderfully melodious language.

Mr. thomas, I'm glad the Persian language is interesting for you, it actually is a rich language and as you pointed, the old Farsi poems are totally melodious and rhythmic with deep meaning and wisdom. Sadly, when Farsi poems are translated into other languages they lose their wonderful order and rhythms.

I am going to create a thread in the Jerf and translate some of the poems of Hafiz, Saadi, and Molavy; three famous old theosophic poets of Iran. Their poems bring a type of mystical relaxation that is not describable, but as I told you when those poems are translated to English their nice rhythm and melody lose.

There are also many professional old Iranian poets rather than Hafiz, Saadi, and Molavy that their poems have other themes. I will translate some of their poems, as well. I recommend you and other educated characters to learn Farsi just for reading those excellent poems. Apart from any nationality feeling I say, Iran has great literature and those poems can affect the life of readers deeply.

My birthplace is Shiraz city; where Hafiz and Saadi were (I hope you can travel to Shiraz and enjoy journeying in this old and green city with a type of mystical state, though the new civilization and buildings have affected the original state ). I actually am a classic poet as well. I think I received a spiritual heritage from those great poets LOL

However, I think, it is a deprivation being away from those old Iranian poems with high literature. that is why I recommend you to learn the Farsi language to be able to read and study the old Persian poems that are the literature treasures, exactly. Every week, month and year many tourists travel to Shiraz and visit Hafiz and Saadi.

Well, at present the only way you become familiar with the poems relatively is that I translate some of the poems while a part of beauties of them ( wonderful rhythm and melody) will lose.

This is a line of Hafiz's poem (750 years ago) :

seat down beside my tomb with wine and music
so that I come back to life dancing from the dust with your sweet-smell
