Isn't Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto (or outside).

All this talk of Kyoto loosing its charm to too
much boring modern buildings.

This looks pretty nice.

Kiyomizu-dera is on the eastern edge of the city, up against the mountains. Kiyomizu is very nice, as are many other temples in Kyoto. Lots of places in Kyoto use "borrowed" landscaping to give the impression of impressive grounds and gardens. Kinkakuji and Ginkakuji are good examples of this. When you stand in one place and look out, you see the manicured grounds belonging to the temple and the the hills beyond. You don't see all the stuff in between. This gives a lot of out-lying temples a very country feel. People usually complain about temples in the heart of the city, where if you borrow scenery, you just wind up with more buildings.

That is a very good point about the borrowed scenery. Kiyomizu is great for that because it is against a mountain that hasn't been covered in power lines or anything. Actually the whole Higashiyama area of Kyoto is really nice. Its possible to walk from Kiyomizu temple all the way to the Heian Jingu and pass through a lot of beautiful temples, shrines, gardens and historic houses without encoutering much ugly modern architecture.
