I also think I understand something about context and combinations of symbols, but I'd be lying if I pretended to know much about it. My first lessons Hiragana and Katakana are far from sufficient to be able to recognize more complicated (for me) symbols.

Can anyone tell me what these mean, please - I'd like to have a rather unbiased translation / opinion.

静 - quiet

The leftmost looks like 氵 and 兼 , but those two components don't make a Japanese character.
Are you sure this isn't chinese?
