Japanese Traditional Music

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if someone could answer a question for me. I've been listening to some music that I've been told is traditional Japanese, and I've noticed that there is a section of it which sounds exactly like Kathak "bols" - short, sharp syllables that are almost spoken rather than sung. What is the Japanese equivalent for this? Or is this a fusion of Japanese and Indian music, and therefore not traditional at all?
