Has anyone heard about the new movie, Japanese Story? It stars Toni Collette(one of my all-time favorite actresses) and Gotaro Tsunashima. It supposedly opened 12/31 in Irvine and L.A. It looks like it could be *gasp* a love story between a caucasian woman and a Japanese man. If anyone has anymore info, I'd like to hear...

Thanks, Gus. I came across those reviews earlier too. I read all of them and pretty much know what is going to happen now. Oh well, I still want to see it. I also loved Muriel's Wedding. As a matter of fact, I watched it earlier today(for the gazillionth time) and that's how I came across Japanese Story. I decided to look up Toni Collette and see what she had going on now, and I'm glad I did. I really want to check this movie out...

I, too, like Toni Collette and have loved her work in the following movies:

Muriel's Wedding
The Sixth Sense
Shaft
Dinner With Friends
Changing Lanes
About a Boy
The Hours

Although there are quite a few of her films I have missed. "The Japanese Story" looks good, and it appears she has two more movies that she completely recently. "The Last Shot" looks very good! Here is a link to her bio:

😄

Okay, I know I'm digging up an old thread, but I just got the DVD today and just finished watching it. If you haven't seen this, I highly recommend you do. Toni Collette is just magnificent in it. It's a really good film, but it is also a major tear jerker. 😭

Anyone else seen it?

Japanese Story is good, but it's kind of hard for me to watch because it's so sad... :(

But the very first one was "Hiroshima Mon Amour" 45 years ago! in 1959.

You know, I had forgotten about that even though it was written by one of my favorite authors, Marguerite Duras! Marguerite Duras also wrote "The Lover", which is one of my top ten favorite movies. It's about a 15 year old French girl who has an affair with a 32 year old Chinese man and it just happens to be her autobiography.

I never saw the film but I DO remember that one. From the 1980s.

I remembered the entangling bodies of Jane March &

Tony Leung...

The Lover is a movie from 1991 but I saw it in 1993. Whoa! PORNOGRAPHY! 🦀

Where?! Where?! :D

I don't think it is fair to call "The Lover" pornographic, even if it isn't much of a movie. I've seen it a long time ago, and it didn't left a big impression in me, even if I was a teenager in high school, looking at an erotic movie, since I remember better and prefer the book itself. But that is usually the problem with movie adaptations.

If the big problem is the relationship between a 15 years old girl and a 27 years old Vietnamese guy, then go talk with Marguerite Duras, since after all, it was part of her life history.

Though from what I have read, Duras herself didn't liked the movie adaptation, and she later published a remake of the book, called the North China Lover.
I haven't read this last one, but I have it on my shortlist.

As for the topic in question, I'm looking forward to see Japanese Story and see if it does survive the hype created around it.
