Japanese living in N. Korea flee home via China
"Dozens of Japanese spouses of North Koreans who fled to China and their families have secretly come back to Japan since the mid-1990s, organizations supporting them have told the Mainichi Shimbun.
A government source admitted that the Foreign Ministry helped them return to Japan even though it has not officially publicized the fact out of consideration for its relations with Beijing and Pyongyang."
