With soo much open sex-industry in Japan. An easy going attitude about sex, compared to the west. Adult-magazines openly displayed, X-rated comics everywhere. Soaplands, Love-Hotels, on and on,
then why is the population declining ?

this occurs as sex for pleasure purpose.

the decline might cause in over-population/economical decline.

That's why God made condoms!!! hehehe!! :p

Currently there's quite a rise in condom usage on a worldwide basis. And the Japanese are very much aware on over-population issues, though they're not as hardcore as Mainland China. But they still love sex!!! :)

I personally think it has sth to do with taking responsibilities and economical issues. I recently heard a short speech given by an NGO worker in Tokyo from BBC World Serive, she pointed out that: sadly in Japan, people would rather prefer to have a dog or a cat than to have a baby.

Low birth rate also has sth to do with psychological factors. People feel pain, e.g there are 2 easiet solutions: drugs and sex, or being suicidale or self-harm. I suffered into depression illness for several years before and I do understand the pain and confusions people have been through. But you have to remember, the pleasure offered by sex is followed by emptiness... (this kind of feeling is well described in Lost in Translation). Be brave and be responsible, not only for your career, but for yourself. You yourself are the biggest enemy. The one thing I think PRC government does very well is about the sex industry. It plays a role as the speed limit on high way.

More women are not marrying, can very well be said to be one factor, and drops in sperm count may have some bearing as well.

Of those women who do marry, more are saying no to children in order to protect their careers. There is also that sexless marriage matter too. Then, there are reason such as what Dharma has mentioned above, to various degrees, it seems. Of course, birthrate is not only dropping in Japan.

In America most career-oriented women have at least one or two children. I thought Eastern culture was in general more children and family oriented. And wasn't there a thread stating that Japanese only marry for children? That wouldn't make any sense why they wouldn't have sex.

Population decline seems to be common in most developed countries in the West such as in the EU as well. I heard that South Korea (which is considered "developed" by many) also has population decline. The US doesn't have to worry too much because of heavy migration I guess but still has to some degree the same thing occurring. Canada and Australia are just begging for more people.

Why do developed countries decline in population? I guess more and more people in developed countries just want to only have fun I guess. Having a couple kids can be a headache as many of you already know. No one wants the headache I guess. And it may also have to do with women wanting to keep their careers more often than taking care of kids. There maybe many factors.

People in japan have been enjoying more and more freedom over the choice of what they want to with their lives over the last 100yrs. In the past women were just expected to learn the roles of being a good wife and looking after the house and making your man happy and things, get married to somone rich with high social status/good reputation, and have loads of babies(perferably boys). This wasn't just for the women, the men were expected to follow this role of family making as well, but they generally had a lot more freedoms than women in their day to day lives and power over the oposite gender.
People in japan right now are enjoying the freedoms they have found, particually socially. I think the decline in people having babies has nothing to do with porn, but rather the fact that people want to live their own lives more and not be so tied down in life to somthing like looking after a child/baby(which is a massive life committment to make).
Women want to stay young and sexy, and not get pregnant and have big stretch marks, saggy boobs and thighs, men want to have lots of fun with as many women as posible and not have to spend all their money supporting and worrying about a child their whole life. An unstable economy probably has somthing to do with it as well- japan hasn't exactly had the most stable economy or supply of jobs over the last couple of decades. When you don't have a child and theres a shrotage of jobs and you cannot earn money, all you have to look after is yourself and your loved ones if you want to, but if you have a child you have to pour all of your resources into bring up their lives while you only come second.

Anyways...People can choose to do what they want- i would prefer it people were having less babies because they didn't want to have them, than if people started to have babies because of social presures on them. And besides, japan has a massive population- its not like their race's surivival is in threat or anything.

I fail to see the absolute relationship between porn and birth rate, just because people like to watch porn does not mean people like to have babies, especially in the case of first world countries where the birth control usage is high. Most first world nations have the same problem with population decline, but I won’t say people are having less sex, but rather the use of higher quality birth control methods, also the fact that the women have better educations, and the change of norms.

It appears that the troubles of population decline in East Asian countries like China, Japan, South Korea and Singapore are greater than that of Western nations.

I heard it somewhere that it is a fact that Japanese women and men are no longer dating each other anymore; they are virtually living individual lives.

The Japanese men are socializing in towns with their friends and colleagues. :sing: While the Japanese women prefer to journey overseas :128: otherwise they choose to hang around with their mothers and girlfriends :112: and operate commercial enterprises.:57: :keitai: These changes have resulted to a huge decline in marriage and birth-rates.

I totally agree with the first about the fact that there can be no linkage between porn and low fertility. However, the second about "Western nations" is not correct: Actually the birthrates in Germany, Italy, Spain and a number of East European countries are also alarmingly low! In the Scandinavian countries we had similar problems in the 80'es, but since it have become far less a economical burden for parents to raise their children and there are plenty of room in kindergartens etc.
Most people who seriously study these issues agree that the main problem arises from the fact that young women in these countries are now mostly well educated and if the choise is between a prefessional career of becoming "house wife" many choose the first - or at least delay having their first child untill it is suddenly too late.
The demographic problems in countries like Japan, Italy and Spain is mainly due to the fact that the societies have changed faster that the people in power can comprehend. One problem is that the people who have the power in these countries are mostly elderly men who are out of touch with the reality of young women.
In Japan as well as most of the other countries the young women have been accused of beeing too lazy of spoiled to live up to their responsibility and produce the next generation - but obviously each individual woman makes her choise. The only way seems to offer the young women the option of taking paid maternaty leave and at the same time enshure that they after a short period of a year or so can return to their jobs.
In Japan the young generation do not even bother to argue with the old conservative "dinosaurs" - they simply live their life. And in a few years this situation will lead to economic decline or increased immigration. But at that time todays generation of old men in power will not need to be reelected - so who cares? If the Japanese women care, they should get involved in politics -it is not likely that the old men are going to change anything....

The trend also for a while was for women to enjoy her single life and get married at a later age. Although I've noticed that a lot of the younger women are reversing that trend and wanting to get married young.

I forget the statistics my wife read in the paper on that, but that is actually quite high.

Also, for some reason, having a second child is near to impossible for many who want one. I would have no idea why though.

Hmmm did I say that Western countries do not have population decline issues? Because I don’t think I did. I just think it seems like the population decline problems in Asian nations seem to be bigger than the Western nations.
From what I heard, Japan also confronts an even worse demographic trouble than Western countries. Japan has a population of people around 65 years old or older than people younger than 20, something which only Italy also has. And it will get a lot worse.

China has a very vast trouble with population decline too, because in pure numbers, the magnitude of China’s coming age flourish is astonishing.

In China there is no pension or health care coverage at all. Most Chinese people proceed to bank on the conventional form of old-age insurance: children. Just as birth numbers fall and urbanization fractures extended families, this common safety net is commencing to ravel out.

In Singapore the unsuccessfulness of highly educated women to get married and have children, assigned in part to the visible predilection of highly educated men for wives with lower education, was separated as a severe societal trouble.

Hong Kong on the other hand does not have the educational, health care and housing resources to support population growth. I think I saw it somewhere that on average in HK woman have less than one child in her life.

South Korea also has the trouble of preserving full employment and a socially feasible society with a moribund population.

Asia contains half the world's people, so the abstractions are at large. Across the next 20 years or so, Asian populations will turn more urbanised and older.

Well, I understand it like you think that the consequenses of declining populations will be worse for Asian countries than for European countries. I guess that you have a point, because the important thing will be how well the various countries are able to adopt the the changed circumstances.
The most recent ressearch on the issue shows that while some countries like France and the Scandinavian countries seem the effectively been able to reverse the downward trend, many other new countries are facing serious problems regarding reproduction. Link: http://www.ssc.upenn.edu/~hpkohler/papers/Low-fertility-in-Europe-final.pdf
The table on page 9 in the above mentioned document gives the most updated figures on the fertility problems in Japan, Korea, USA and the European countries.
The situation regarding difficulty of being mother and having a job is very similar in Italy, Spain and Japan. I is therefore worth noting that recent ressearch is qouted on page 16 in the above mentioned document: ツ“ツ….-low fertility in Southern Europe has occurred in a context with a very low compatibility of childbearing with woman’s labor market participation, which is due to the difficulties in entering and re-entering the labor market and the limited flexibility of working hours (Bettio and Villa 1998; Del Boca 2002).ツ”
My point would be that maybe the experiences from the countries who have had success in reversing the trend could be of use for other countries.
I feel that I have noticed a paradox: most men in Japan complains about too long working hours (too much overwork), while many women would like to work more (at least enough to get a proper contract with pension etc., instead of the low-status part-time jobs they often have to make do with).
OK, I know that most posts regarding this were merely ment as fun, but this is a far more important issue than most people have realised yet.

I think its the over-crowded big cities, when you've spent all your life in the every-man-for-himself enviroment of a big japanese city, little personal space, and women finally finding some independence, why would they want to ruin that with kids?.

they dont want kids because the quality of life in a big japanese city doesnt lend itself naturally to children, it can have all the childcare facilities, all the modern bits and bobs a child can need, but with a mother living in a cramped society as it is, having a child would take what little freedom and personal space she has.

I dunno, i guess i can just see why she would be hesitant.

I love Japan but god knows, i could never life the rest of my life in a big city, ide live in the country or not in Japan at all. ☝

I guess because eveyone is practicing birth control; e.g using condoms, or performing oral sex, masturbating one another, etc., instead of coitus Anyone who thinks "I want sex, but I don't want a baby" will do so, I assume.

Am I the only one that thinks the world would be better with less people? Have you seen in what we are turning the world into with all that massive population?
We are an extremely invasive species, and during all the history until now, the only ways to regulate the human population were wars and plagues. Fortunately, now people has another view about sex, procreation and lifestyle, and if you add that the children are extremely expensive, we don't need more wars and things like that to control our own population.
Yes, I'm sure you're thinking "but how we're going to keep our technology level, our capitalist-hungry world, that need more and more "markets" to expand itself (so, more people to buy). Well, the answer is easy: let's try to live in another way, another world, another organization, with all the people in the world with a high-level of education, a low children rate, and what if in a century the world has decreased its population in 2.000 Million? Oh my god, yes, we were not able to build nuclear plants and consume gas, because there was not enough people to consume it... Damn! Do you realize that right now we are puppets of those large companies? Do we really need them?
OK, I've already vented for today. 窶堙懌?堋ス窶堙?!!

You already made a thread about this question, here. Please don't post the same question mulitple places, or again, for that matter.
