Hi, I signed up in this forum because I had a doubt and wanted to know if someone could help me clear it out. I would like to know how to write the word Katana, or the word Sword. Wikipedia tells me that Katana is 刀. Does that mean that 刀 represents the whole word of Katana, or is that how you say Sword in general? How does this work? I would appreciate the help, cheers.

刀 is the character for "katana," and it means sword (particularly the Japanese longsword that is synonymous with the name). When read, the character is pronounced, predictably, "katana." When used in a compound word like 日本刀, the pronunciation changes to トウ [to:], as in "tow" or "toe."

ナ停?「, reading "ken" or "tsurugi", also means "sword".
