Hello peterrey, I'm just starting to learn the kanji also. A very good resource site:

for many links. Are you using any books as well? Could you recommend any?

I'd recommend "Reading Japanese" from the Princeton University Press. (D'oh! I forgot the authors. That should be helpful -_-)
It teaches katakana and hiragana (although it uses kunrei romanization: beware!) and 425 kanji.
