I’m going to visit Japan this summer and I have a question for those who have already been or live there. I know that a huge amount of Japanese people are heavy smokers and they often smoke in restaurants and bars, although I never smoke or vape indoors, I’m wondering, is it allowed to vape in these places as well? Maybe someone here can help me.

Vaping is viewed the same as smoking here in Japan. More and more bars and restaurants are smoke-free (including vape-free). Its the same as anywhere else: no smoking virtually always means "no vaping either". There are sometimes designated spaces outside for smoking or vaping. If there are no designated spaces, people find a quiet place out off the streets to smoke.

@Majestic By more and more, do you mean Tokyo? I’d read they were cutting it way down before the Olympics come to town. Where I am, the izakayas and ramen shops are as smoky as ever. Just the other day, a salary man sparked up a cigarette after his lunch in order to ruin mine.
