I think "Merry Christmas" in Chinese/Mandarin should be (in Pinyin) "Sheng Dan (Jie) Kuai Le", "Happy New Year" is "Xin Nian Kuai Le".

I have a different version for Cantonese as well - "Sing Dan Fai Lo".

Bossel,

That's interesting because I had the same kind of question about the Italian phrase. Wasn't sure it was right. Maybe this list isn't very reliable!

Satori

I only know the English, Japanese, and Hawaiian (this phrase is used tons and tons of times in Hawaii... you can never forget it... like 'aloha' and 'mahalo') ones.

Keiichi,

I know "Aloha," and I like the fact that it can be used for "Hi" and "Good-bye." But what does "Mahalo" mean? I've heard it before, but I don't know what it means.

Even in Japanese .....Merii Kurisumasu is much more used than Kurisumasu Omedeto.

That's good to know, Elizabeth!! I wonder how wrong the rest of that list is. "Calling all members from other countries ...!!" :D Thanks for letting me know about Japan!

The only others I know are Dutch & German. Seem to be alright, though the spelling is not 100%.

It is kind of odd though that Peru includes "Happy New Year" which apparently they don't say in Argentina, Chile and may or may not in Spanish depending on the list :). And Portuguese is either good parties and a happy new year or simply happy christmas. So maybe Italian is also something idiomatic along these lines :).

Atmos Fear,

What did you just say? Were you pointing out that the list got it wrong?

Satori
:)

Thanks, Elizabeth. I think you're right, because the Italian is correct in this list you just posted. :)

Although other lists do include both Buone Feste Natalizie and Buon Natale e Felice Anno Nuovo, so thought the former could be an outmoded expression or more of a regional dialect (Italian is full of these, isn't it) (?). And the Mandarin doesn't appear to match bossel's sample either....

I just learned "Buon Natale e Felice Anno Nuovo" for "Merry Christmas & Happy New Year" so I'm really not that familiar with Italian, per se. But I also note that my first post doesn't even list Mandarin at all, so that's weird.

On Mandarin: I used Pinyin, the official PRC diction. That may be part of the confusion, eg "hsin nien" = "xin nian" = "new year".
Perhaps your version is from Taiwan (looks like the Taiwanese spelling system to me), I don't know which greetings they use.

We have some Chinese in here, they should be able to shed some light on this.

Well, I'm a Chinese, most of the time we will say
Sheng Dan Kuai Le (merry xmas)/Xin Nian Kuai Le
and in cantonese is Seng Dan Fai Lok/Sang Ning Fai Lok

I'm cantonese myself, and nato_no is correct:

Merry Xmas is Seng dang fai lok

Happy new year is Sun lin fai lok

Fai lok means happy

For the Happy New Year part, the standard idiom seems to be 'guten Rutsch', to which you could probably add (ins neue Jahr)..
Literally meaning a happy slide (into the new year)

This is fun learning parts of other languages! Thanks everyone for sharing and correcting things!

There's only one person alive in the world that speaks Manx you know... and he's quite an old man... never taught it to anybody, don't think he has any family... so unfortunately, it seems like the language is going to be lost, unless the British/Manx governments do something about it real soon... It's a shame really, the loss of an entire language and to some extent a culture... and it's unlikely to be resurrected like Greek or Latin if it is lost, being as obscure as it is...

It's very similar to Old Irish, isn't it? And I read someplace that is one of the most difficult languages to learn....
