I went into a Kyoto restaurant for the first time yesterday and with my limited Japanese, just gave the menu number of what I wanted. Then they asked me something, which I presume must have been whether I wanted to take it to go. So they put the food in a bag and sent me on my way. What phrase did they most likely ask me? Also, how would I explain that I wanted to sit down and eat instead?

The probably asked you: お持ち帰りですか? (omochi kaeri desuka?) if you want to eat it inside you could say 店内で (tennai de)
